Don't Get Stuck in Your Mind
filed in Mind, Body Connection on Oct 18, 2006
A friend yesterday told me that she was getting divorced. She described herself in shell shock. “I thought it would never happen to me”. “What do I do now with the holiday’s coming”. Can anyone relate? She talked and talked and talked picking up speed as she continued. I could sense that her mind was going a mile a minute, even faster.
Unfortunately, because we want so badly to remain in control of our feelings and away from our pain we let the mind take over and we hide within the flood of thoughts. We do this way into the evening causing us to have difficulty sleeping. We take refuge in our minds thinking, thinking and thinkikng about what is happening, bouncing back and forth from the past to the unknow future, seldom dropping into our body connecting with our feelings.
Don’t get stuck in your mind, your body is wise and your feelings, when felt, are food for your soul. So you must stop as often as you can and ask yourself, “how am I feeling”. Then pause, take a few deep breaths and visualize yourself dropping into the center of your body. Identify what you feel, name the feeling and say it outloud. Get familiar with your body and the feelings that are ready to surface.
Here is a visualization you can try prior to bedtime. Imagine that you are in an elevator on the top floor of a tall building. Visualize yourself moving down from one floor to the next until you get to the bottom. Start at the top of your head and move down slowly through the rest of your body. Dropping into the center of your body will help you to heal your feelings. Trust your body, it is wise. Let me know how this visualization works or if you have one of your own visualization you can share with others.
